For a complete beginner, what's the best course to start diving?

BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) and Padi (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) are the 2 main organisations. I am a BSAC member so here is what I know about it. The first scuba diving course of BSAC is "ocean diver". There is also a snorkelling course.
